A lot had been going on since Eilis, the main character, had started her life in Brooklyn. There, she found someone special to her and found a new job opportunity that she had desired for so long. However, with her sister’s sudden death, Eilis was forced to make a decision between remaining in somewhere she had kept so many memories and returning to a place where she was able to become a new person.
This book focused a lot on the transformation of Eilis. It’s not merely a typical romance novel, but rather a story that was standing on a woman’s perspective toward her own life. The way she dealt with loneliness and the way she tried to make a decision were probably what the author was trying to convey to the reader. When reading this book, I could feel the dilemma that was pulling Eilis on each side between Brooklyn and Ireland. It occurred to me some of the articles that I read about identity crisis. Take Chinese-American for example. There must be a lot of them trying to figure out whether they were Chinese or American. It’s like there were two parts of the culture pulling them but they can’t decide which they belonged. Inside their mind, they grew up with the value of Chinese people, but at the same time, they were also being affected by the American culture. Like Eilis, though she did not born with two culture differences, she was still facing the difficulty of which she belongs to. This issue had been lingering in my mind throughout my reading of this book. I don’t know how I would make up my mind if I am facing the same questions either. If it were you, what’s your decision then?
