Log #3

‘If you knew just half of what happens in yours, or anywhere else in the world, you’d be horrified.’ We all have seen movies about how agents from all around the countries reveal big secrets behind governments or special military and save lives of the public. There are too many untold truths for a country whether to keep hidden rules run regularly or to manipulate interests and benefits for particular individuals or groups. When Sarah was told that P2 had complicated connection with parties, terrorist groups and religious organizations, she couldn’t help trying to figure out how things happening in the whole world were controlled by P2 and feeling frustrated about the truth as a journalist.
As a citizen in Taiwan, I frequently watch news about politics and policies in connection with China. Sometimes I will keep suspecting if the truth is as same as the reporter presents or come up with all kinds of possibilities about how the decisions are made by our government. I think we should always hold suspicious viewpoints toward things we see or hear to understand truth objectively.

Dear all,

I have to remind you again: please label your logs correctly, or the statistic would not be not right. For example, there have been many of you submitting your log 2 (43) and log 3 (33), but there are still "outlaws" not included, e.g. log 2 (1) and log 3 (2). Our assistants will only check your posts for those who labeled correctly (e.g. from log 2(43)) and leave the rest (log 2 (1) or log 3(2)) as late works.   Please check if you have followed the rule.

Second, we couldn't finish talking about the article "youth should serve" and the way to write an organized reflection. This week, after reading your blogposts, I must say there's still a lot to be desired.

This Monday, after the sharing session, I have another example to offer.

Finally, always bring a book to class.

When someone discovers a secret that had been hidden for your entire life by his/her extremely closed one, he/she must go through a tough experience to embrace the reasons behind that secret which is really harmful.
After Sarah was almost shot to death, she received a call from her father that it was all about an illicit organization he was involved in. It’s hard for her to realize that her dear father was a member of P2, which made her life threatened.

It reminds me one thing happened when I was a ten-year-old girl. After recovering from the pain of losing father, my father was informed that he was inherited a great amount of debt from my grandpa because he gambled before he died. My father spent lots of time and effort earning money to pay back and forgiving his father. Even I was so young that I wasn’t told the reason, I could still easily feel his anger, sorrow and tiredness. As a result, I can feel more what the the writer try to express when I read this book.

The Power of Words

Knowing the 20-minute tragedy that had happened in Stanford University, I begun to speculate what brings about such vicious behavior. Then I recalled this video called "Dear Daddy." Although we all recognize the importance to stop male chauvinism and to support sexual equality, where should we start? This video gives a possible answer.

Do Not Read This ~ The problem of illiterate

Have you ever thought about what it would be like for not being able to read? This means you can't not only  read your favorite books, but also the tag on the medicine or even the signs on the street. We all take being able to read for granted, but it's not the same to everyone.

Recently I saw a video that was a commercial about illiteracy. Nowadays, we might think that there are seldom people who can’t read in the world; however, there are still nearly 20% of the adult population that are illiterate.

Therefore, I would like to share an article about illiterate and the commercial that I saw.

How do you do to stay alive?

Have you ever questioned what you are doing right now is the exact things you want to do or they aren't you really want?
*I would like to share:
1. A short video clip from a movie called The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwVet-ZM39s&t=4s
Here's one of the quotes from the movie:
To see the world, things dangerous to come to, to see behind walls, draw closer, to find each other, and to feel. That is the purpose of life.

2. Lyrics of a song named Stay Alive
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NucJk8TxyRg

There's a rhythm in rush these days
Where the lights don't move and the colors don't fade
Leaves you empty with nothing but dreams
In a world gone shallow
In a world gone lean

Sometimes there're things a man cannot know
Gears won't turn and the leaves won't grow
There's no place to run and no gasoline
Engines won't turn and the train won't leave

I will stay with you tonight
Hold you close 'til the morning light
In the morning watch a new day rise
We'll do whatever just to stay alive
We'll do whatever just to stay alive

Well the way I feel is the way I write
It isn't like the thoughts of the man who lies
There is a truth and it's on our side
Dawn is coming
Open your eyes
Look into the sun as the new days rise

And I will wait for you tonight
You're here forever and you're by my side
I've been waiting all my life
To feel your heart as it's keeping time
We'll do whatever just to stay alive

Dawn is coming
Open your eyes

Look into the sun as the new days rise

There's a rhythm in rush these days
Where the lights don't move and the colors don't fade
There is a truth and it's on our side
Dawn is coming
Open your eyes
Look into the sun as a new days rise

*Take time to think of what is the purpose of life and share your opinions with your teammates.

LOG #3

I’m sorry for being late. I wronged the deadline.

After heading south for about 60 pages (seems like almost a year in the novel), the father and the son finally encountered other human beings. After having a conversation, the father discovered that they’re not good guys. The instinct of father exploded.

The first ever action scene amazed me. Sentences like “He was a big man but he was very quick. He dove and grabbed the boy and rolled and came up holding him against his chest with the knife at his throat.” If there wasn’t the sentence “he was a big man but he was very quick”, audiences would probably only imagine the actions that the bad guy done, but with this line, all the actions seemed like be done in a flash.

If I was the father, what would I do? The father in the story “had already dropped to the ground and he swung with him and leveled the pistol and fired from a two-handed position balanced on both knees at a distance of six feet”. Jesus! The father shot the bad guy while the bad guy was still grabbing he’s own son at a distance of six feet! Though six feet is not a long distance, I wouldn’t dare taking that shot instantly. What if I shot my son? The father must have a great confidence that I don’t have.

The biggest problem I face is the lack of confidence. Growing up, I’ve been told to make things perfect. So, when I encounter something that not good, I criticize. But every time I criticize, I’m slowly killing my own confidence. And end up becoming afraid of being criticized. Too much self-expectation made me not willing to present myself. I’m trying to improve myself, but can I make it? Maybe the father in the novel can teach me.

Before I Go To Sleep
After reading more than half of the book, I feel like being more and more addicted to the book. Every time when I was reading, I could feel myself sink into the world of reading and truly experienced the feeling of time passing so fast when reading. The story never ran out of steam. One clue and the other connected tightly and the unpredictable story line attracted me a lot.
From what I have read this time, Christine has gradually recovered. She could now remember some plot or some clip of what happened the day before. Besides, she found that her husband, Ben, had kept lying to her from the diary she kept. The one that shocked me the most was that Christine didn't get injured because of the car accident, which Ben always told her she did, instead, she was found naked and bloody on the street without any memory and was sent to the hospital. Furthermore,  there was a scene that kept popping up in Christine's mind — She was in a hotel room with a clean bed, a sofa, candles and flower aroma; a man came to the door and knock on it. She couldn't recognize the face of the man. I supposed the scene must be a great clue to what really happened to Christine.

Think Different

Original Realsed Version:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmwXdGm89Tk

Think Different - Apple, Inc. Commercial, 1997

Here's to the crazy ones.
The misfits.
The rebels.
The troublemakers.
The round pegs in the square holes.
The ones who see things differently.
They're not fond of rules
And they have no respect for the status quo.

You can praise them, quote them, disagree with them
disbelieve them, glorify or vilify them.
About the only thing that you can't do is ignore them.
Because they change things.

They invent.     They imagine.     They heal.
They explore.   They create.        They inspire.
They push the human race forward.

Maybe they have to be crazy.

How else can you stare at an empty canvas and see a work of art?
Or sit in silence and hear a song that's never been written?
Or gaze at a red planet and see a laboratory on wheels?
We make tools for these kinds of people.

While some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius.
Because the people who are crazy enough to think that they can

change the world, are the ones who do.

Q: How many people in the video can you recognize?

Q: Why are they on this video?
