The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
Author: Arthur Conan Doyle
In the second story, The Red-headed League,
Sherlock encountered a unique case that he couldn't discover any clue as usual.
However, the normal case concealed an ambitious crime. The coolest, smartest
criminal in London, John Clay, tried to rob a bank for bullion. They came up
with a plan, an advertisement called a red-headed league to make the pawnbroker,
Jabez Wilson, absent from his business for hours so that they could burrow a
tunnel to the bank.
I really enjoyed the plot that Sherlock and
Dr. Watson hid in the bank vault and waiting for the criminals to show up. The description
was vivid and the pace was fast. I felt as nervous as Dr. Watson when reading
this part. I even felt afraid when John Clay appeared because I thought they
might have firefight. Also, John Clay was a smart criminal. He was so brilliant
that he thought up the plan. It seemed that it was a simple prank to Jabez
Wilson at first. Nonetheless, an ambitious burglary was behind it. In addition,
it was interesting that he was still dignified when he was caught and handcuffed.
After finish reading this, I couldn’t wait
to read what cases or criminals that Sherlock and Dr. Watson will meet.
