There are so many books that talk about self-discovering that entitled with the word “life.” As a result, I wasn’t sure which book to choose at first. However, after someone recommend the book “Divergent” to me, I decided to pick up this book and browse through the storylines.
This book seems to be talking about an adventure, and it sure is. However, aside from adventurous stories, there are more meanings behind the stories. At the very beginning of the book, it talks about the main role-Beatrice, who was born in the faction of Abnegation. It is a faction that focuses a lot on selflessness. Being a member of this faction means that you would spend the rest of your life helping others instead of thinking for yourself. Although when they turned sixteen, there would be a ceremony called “Choosing Day” held for them to decide whether they wanted to transfer or not. In her aptitude test before Choosing Day, Beatrice found out that she was actually Divergent, who had the characteristics from three factions. Surprising as she was, Beatrice was not sure which one to choose from, especially it is too hard to tell her parents about transfer to other faction, which equals to saying goodbye to her whole family.
However, Beatrice knew that she was different. She didn’t belong to the faction of Abnegation. In the end, she transferred to Dauntless, the faction that sees braveness as the honor. Unfortunately, her transfer made her father disappoint and unwilling to visit her on the day for visiting Dauntless. As the only transfer from Abnegation, she met a lot of people who insulted her due to her appearance or height. Beatrice tried hard to improve herself. She did not want anyone to despise for reasons not related to her ability. It was not easy for her to become a member of Dauntless. You should pass the initiation before really becoming a member of them, or else you would turn factionless. Beatrice forced herself to work hard in training and evaluation. Happily, she won the first place in the end.
Does it sound like a normal story with a happy ending? Definitely not. The story actually reveals some important points:
1. Follow your heart: in the Choosing Day, Beatrice did not choose the faction her parents actually want her to choose. She knew that she did not belong to her original faction, and she is brave enough to do what she really wanted to. In the future, you may meet some situation that is hard to choose from. At that time, you need to hold on to the one you really want, instead of the one others want you to choose.
2. Attitude is everything: Being a transfer, it is hard for Beatrice to rank first in the evaluation. She knew that well, and that’s why she still work hard and did not fail in the end. In all the places, your attitude will decide where you end up.
3. If you really want something, just don’t give up: Beatrice did not want to be factionless, which gave her the power to work harder. Also, she wanted to beat those who despised her. As a result, she insisted on her training and won at last. Once we grow up, it might be hard for us to remember what we are fighting for. Sometimes you might lose confidence, but just keep on going. You will find yourself somewhere in the end if you did not give up.
Making decision is not an easy task. Sometimes we are too afraid to make a decision because of the vague outcome that we will yield from our decision. In Beatrice point of view, She knew what she really want in her life, what her future will be like, and what she would like to become.
