Log #7

I watched the two videos shared by the professor on the blog and I was truly inspired in several ways. I also thought about, Girlboss, a Netflix original series I liked a lot recently and I wanted to make a connection with the two videos about self-doubt and self-acceptance.

Sophia, a misfit, discovers a passion for fashion, becoming an unlikely businesswoman in the process. As her business grows, however, she has to learn to cope with life as her own boss. This show is loosely based on the true story of Nasty Gal Founder, Sophia Amoruso.
On episode six, Sophia faces a problem of unable to sell a vintage gunne sax. She is extremely frustrated and has a mental breakdown. She thinks she's a failure, having no vision and no creativity. After her explosion, her hernia exploded as well. She eventually figures out that she needs to pull herself together and just simply get rid of that gunne sax to start over.

What I thought interesting was that sometimes I would have doubts for myself, like Sophia had, too. I remembered when I was in junior high school, I joined a English speech contest held by my junior high. I thought I did a great job until the judges announced the winners and I wasn't one of them. I was so disappointed at myself, thinking I'm such a loser who is fails at what I love to do. Knowing I'm was in such disappointment, my parents told me, "We all feel lost in life sometimes, but that's when we get to find ourselves again." Just like Sophia, I pulled myself together and self-doubt was gone. During high school, I joined school's English speech contest again. This time, not only I won the first place of school's English speech contest, but I also won the first place of Taoyuan County's English contest. (At that time, Taoyuan was still a county.)

I guess having self-doubt is a normal thing; after all, we're all imperfect. The most important things are having faith in yourself again and learning the power of self-acceptance, like what Harry Baker has mentioned in his TED talk. He said, "I believe that words hold power. Words of hatred are very hard to shake off." However, as long as we're learning to listen to "those who love us because those that love you of those that know you best, and those that know you best have the most important things to say". I have learned to listen to my parents and become who I am today. I learned that I can't be everything to everyone, but at least I can be everything to someone. Just like my favorite talk show hostess, Ellen DeGeneres once said, "Accept who you are. Unless you're a serial killer!"
