I have watched a movie called Dead Poets Society. It is a film talking about how a teacher changes his students. Welton Academy is an elite-prepared school, so the rules are very strict. Every parent who sends their kids to there has planned the future for their children. However, most of them have their dream. At the time, a new English teacher is introduced. His name is John Keating, and he encourages the students to live their lives extraordinarily. One of the students, Todd Anderson, tries to express his hobby to his dad, but because of the pressure he gains from his father, he chooses to commit suicide.

First, in Dead Poets Society, what I saw is a teacher who makes education more interesting. For example, I remember clearly that in one of John Keating's classes he encourages the students to rip off the pages talking about the introduction. It is because he wants to express his opinion that the poem should not be analysed with logic but feel the beauty of the lines with their hearts and lives. Also, John Keating asks the students to stand on the table. He is trying to teach them to look things in different perspectives.

Another thing I saw in this film is the power John Keating gave to the students. The students in the movie are under enormous pressure from both the school and their parents. The school tries to shape the students into a perfect student model with excellent performances, and the parents try to plan for their kids what themselves want instead of what the children dreamt. I think it is very important for a teacher to speak encouraging words and help the students to find their dreams.

Lastly, what touches me the most is the way how John Keating has done to solve the situation of Todd Anderson although the student does not do what the teacher suggest. It is great to have such a good teacher that helps when needed. It reminds me of the time when I was bullied by my classmates in elementary where my teacher just told me to ignore the bullies. It is a period that totally turns my personalities around. I believe if I had met a good teacher like John Keating, I would have great confidence in myself.

Therefore, I would work hard to be a teacher just like John Keating. I do not want any students to suffer from the same situation happening to me before.

  1. I just introduced this movie to one of your friends, who also aspires to be a teacher! Dead Poet Society (like 春風化雨)talks about how a great teacher can inspire students to bravely embrace their passions. It needs courage, because there is always a tug of war between the traditional values held by society, parents, or systems, and the pursuits, interests, and goals of the children. I have been teachers for years, and I am still in the war, not intending to compromise at all...
