Book title: Wuthering Heights
Author: Emily Brontë
From chapter five to ten, Mr. Earnshaw passed away, and Hindley came back
to Wuthering Heights with his wife. He degraded Heathcliff to a servant and tortured
him as much as possible. After Catherine stayed at Thrushcross Grange because
of the injury, she was transformed into a young lady, and became closer to
Edgar Linton. Hindley became tyrannical after his wife passed away because of
giving a birth to Hareton, and Heathcliff was glad to see
Hindley’s downfall. After he knew that Catherine accepted Edgar’s engagement, Heathcliff
vanished for three years. He suddenly came back with decent manners and great
fortune, and this not only made Catherine happy but also made Isabella fall in
love with Heathcliff.
It seems that Heathcliff is ready to do something
to revenge though what he does hasn’t been revealed completely. When I read it,
I feel the love between Catherine and Heathcliff is not mature. It is certain
that their love is strong and makes them blind, but their love doesn’t make
them brave enough to conquer everything. Catherine still cares about the Heathcliff’s
identity owing to the society in that generation. Also, I think the love that
Edgar give to Catherine is great because he tolerates her impoliteness and meanness,
but his love spoils her as well. In this novel, love is so fierce and so impulsive,
which is a great comparison with the society at that time.
