Book: Go Set a Wathman
Author: Harper Lee
Finally, I finished “Go Set a Watchman”. At the
end of the story, Jean Louise accepted the Southern thought, and she broke her
father’s image in her mind as a hero. She realized that nothing in the world is
unchangeable. She has long considered her father as the embodiment of justice. She
confused her father with God. She never saw him as a man with a man’s heart,
and a man’s failings. Yet, Uncle Jack successfully convinced her to face the
inconvenient truth.
I was surprised to see that she decided not to
marry Henry. I saw how great Henry was in her memory, and she even had crush on
him fiercely. How great Henry had affected her. Therefore, I predicted Jean
Louise would forgive and marry him after everything was solved, and she would
understand his position. However, she did understand, but she just respected
his choice. He’s just not her kind.
What’s the true meaning of equality? It’s always
hard to strike a balance between the ideal and the reality. Just like the
chapter in Go Set a Watchman, Jean Louise proclaimed the black should have the
equal right same with the white, despite the fact that they’re backward, we
should still let them have the hope in mind, since they are human. However, as
the point mentioned by Atticus, they would definitely destroy the whole system
of government if they were equipped with the ability to manage Maycomb, because
they were backward and low-educated.
For how long, we human beings have been searching
for absolutely correct. Yet, the book unceremoniously conveyed us with the idea”
Every man’s island, every man’s watchman, is his conscience. There is no such
thing as a collective conscious.” We should always be aware of our mind. We
should keep our own conscience. We have to build up our own value, instead of
being affected by others. When the world is chaotic, when the humanity is dull,
we must keep our own conscience, and never be influenced by others’ rhetoric.
Then what is your "own conscience and value?"
