Book: The Life List
Author: Lori Nelson Spielman
Pages: 75-166
Reading till now, Brett has accomplished three requirements, which are having performance on the stage, helping poor people and being friends with Carrie Newsome. Last week I read about how she perform on the stage. This week, from those pages I’ve read, Brett was trying hard on looking for her dad since she found out that her dad is not the one she used to know. Her dad is actually a guy who had affair with her mom. At the same time when a detective was looking for Johnny Manns, Brett’s real father, she found a job of a substitute teacher in a school but got fired on her first day. She, then, went to teach those who cannot go to school and found herself doing well. She finally discovered that teaching was her passion.
At the middle of those pages, she broke up with Andrew, her boyfriend, because their perspectives are different. I am sure that Elizabeth, mother of Brett, knew that this was the best result for Brett that’s why she planned to make her out of this relationship. After Brett broke up with Andrew, she moved all of her belongings into the Joshua House because she found out that Andrew and one of her friends, Megan, actually had an affair.
When Brett went to meet Carrie and her family, she had a talk with David and Mary, parents of Carrie, discovering that they are the friends of Johnny Manns. The conversation gave Brett a hope of finding her real father. In fact, Elizabeth gave Brett a clue on her father in one of the letter.
As I reading through the pages, the accomplishments are not everything I saw. I also noticed the changes of feelings of Brett in her perspective and life. She discovered the real things she wanted to do in her life, not being a CEO nor working in a business, instead, teaching. In addition, those pages showed that Brett also had changes in her personality. She began to be brave enough of speaking up what she had in her thoughts. For example, she asked Andrew if he became her boyfriend just for the money. It might seem nothing much to some people, but a small step of courage is a large success in a person. Thus, this is encouraging especially to people who are timid or cowardly like me.
When I read through the pages, I came up with a question. Is the life I had now what I really want? I think this is also the main theme of this book that author wanted to tell us. I believe that the author wanted us to think about our life and decision, to recall the very real and deep part of ourselves also to review what we had lost in the past.
I started to think about the question I asked myself when I done with those pages. When I was in high school, I like to draw, so I decided that I was going to major in English and Design. However, as I went through my thoughts, I discovered that this is actually not the life I want. I did not like the design as much as I had thought in the past. Instead, I love sharing the knowledge I know and teaching people in the simplest way to understand.
Thus, I made up a choice. For next semester, I am not going to choose some of the courses from the department of design, which are the requirements of majoring in design. On the other, I would like to enrol in the educational programme in our school.
