Book: The girl on the train
Author: Paula Hawkins
Page: ~83
Our group chose this book, which was written by Paula Hawkins for our group reading project.
Rachel, a divorced woman, is a alcoholic who always goes to work by train. When the train stops at one of the signals, she will observe Jess and Jason's life(Rachel names them. Their real names are Megan and Scott.). They are the projection of her psychology. Megan is perfect to Rachel- beautiful, happy, married to a handsome man. Their perfect life which in her imagination is what she long for.
Before I read this book, I tried to find some evaluations of it on the Internet. To my disappointment, most of the evaluations say it is not so good even not worth of buying. I was so afraid that if we made the wrong choice. However, after reading it, I found myself totally immerse in the writing that the story was fascinating and author was so good at depicting. I was especially impressed by the way the author portrayed the struggle of the characters. I could easily picture it in my mind as if I were one of them. And there also contain lots of rhymes that makes me appreciate the author even more.
Basically, as the evaluations say it's a story about a drunken woman and her imagination. A lot of bad things will not happen if Rachel doesn't drink. However, it's also the core throughout the whole book. In my point of view, I cannot accept someone like Rachel appearing in my life. You can ruin your own life but not others'. It is immoral and irresponsible. I hope people around me and myself will all be nice and kind to others and lead a happy life, not a miserable life like Rachel. And she is the one who makes her life like that.
