The Great Gatsby
 F. Scott Fitzgerald

The reason why I choose this book is that I have read it when I was a senior high student and I really like it. When the first time I read this book, I have been fascinated by its wonderful plot. Also, there are many deep meanings that I have learned from it. It is so famous that it becomes a part of American high school curricula and numerous stage and film adaptations.

In the story, the main character’s father once said, “Whenever you feel like judging anyone, just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.” I have been impressed by this sentence since I turned to the first page of this book. It means that you don’t have to judge others because you don’t really have to. You must have something advantages that others don’t have.

There is a green light in the book; I think it is a symbol of Gatsby’s future and hope toward Daisy. He was deeply in love with her and he could sacrifice himself for her. However, the green light disappeared in the end of the story; it meant that Gatsby’s dream was broken. I think that the green light in the book can be a symbol of all the people’s future and dream. We spend lots of times making ourselves better and better in order to make our dreams come true. However, some people may succeed, but some may like Gatsby that can’t fulfill their dreams. Despite the fact that we don’t know what our future will be, all we can do is to work harder and harder. As a saying goes, “There is no elevator to success. You have to take the stairs.” After all, there are no successful people without working hard.

  1. I've watched the movie but I haven't read the book yet. From the story, I learned a lot. And it also reminds me to work hard and keep my feet on the ground. Although it is not an easy novel to read, I sure you can gain some enlightenment from it.
