The novel I picked up is called We All
Looked Up by Tommy Wallach. I was astonished by the short introduction which
was written on the inside jacket, and I felt like I wanted to read more about
the story, so I deiced to give it a shot.
The first few chapters were very slow.
I was introduced to the four main characters – the attractive athlete, the
sell-out artist, skater boy, and the perfect everything girl. Four high-school
students that were totally different from each other and weren't very relatable
since each one of them had very extreme characteristics. Every one of them had
a mix of two or more complex personalities.
As I read further, I learned that
there was an asteroid coming down toward the Earth, and everyone knew that they
only got two months left to live. Then the story was picked up and started
going faster than I imaged. The main characters remain the same lifestyles as
before while many other families moved into something similar cabins or
solitaries in order to have more time together. However, they did change their
way of doing things, for example, they'd make risky decisions, do things they
wouldn't normally do, rush traveling throughout the country, etc.
I'm somewhat in the middle of the
novel, where romance came in. I have to admit that it took a huge part of the
novel. A love triangle; two boys going after the same girl, which often led to
fights, arguments, misunderstandings and foolish decisions. Although I don't
quite understand why wouldn't they just ask the girl out on a date or something
while they only had two months left, in addition, why would an unsure love be
so important to them in the first place? I'd rather choose my family and
friends than the person I like in secret instead. Nevertheless, the little love
story fitted and worked in the story perfectly.
I like the format of the novel so far,
I really enjoy it. The third person point of views helped me to understand what
was happening around the characters, and the plot just sucked me into their
lives which made me feel like I was with them this whole time. I can't wait to
read more.
