Book: The Reader
Author: Bernhard Schlink
Page: 1-50
I don't have a habit of reading English novels, so it's quite difficult for me to make a decision in the library. After taking several books in hand in turns, I finally grabbed this one, The Reader, to the counter. The reason why I chose this book lies in the remarks and the abstract of the book.In my opinion, a national bestseller shouldn't be so difficult and boring to read. Also, the abstract of The Reader makes me think it's a book about crime and mystery, which are topics that I am interested in most. Thus, I decided to take it as my book for the class.
As far as I had read, the story is about a boy named Michael who was quite ill met the woman named Hanna who was twice older than him, and afterwards he couldn't help falling in love with her. What's more, they even made love.
From Chapter 1 to Chapter 10, the author describes the images of the surroundings and the characters well. Though there are several difficult and advanced vocabulary for me to understand, I can still picture the image while reading the book. For example, "She was wearing a sleeveless smock, blue with little pale red flowers on it. Her shoulder-length, ash-blond hair was fastened with a clip at the back of her neck. Her bare arms were pale." can be good description for me to picture how Hanna looks like.
As for Michael's obsession of Hanna, I cannot grasp any hints from the contexts. They first met each other because of Michael's illness. On his way home, he was too fainted to go home by himself. At that time, Hanna appeared and took him back to her house to help him clean his body. Then, their second meeting is for Michael to show his gratitude for Hanna. He kept paying attention to what Hanna did, and thought she was very beautiful and charming. Thus, I assume Michael simply fell in love with Hanna while seeing her. Sometimes it's hard for me to believe there is a kind of love that can appear very soon as long as I look into someone's eyes. However, there is no denying that this kind of love does exist.
