First of all, I have to say I'm not a good reader either in Mandarin or English since I only read what I want to read and I only stick to a certain type of books. However, I love reading essentially. The book that inspired me a lot is called, 他來了,請閉眼, which combines the element of suspense and criminal psychology. Before I read this book, only love stories could catch my eyes. Nevertheless, this book broadened my horizons and took me to another world which is so amazing and full of fun. I started to have interests in criminal minds and logical thinking; I started to pay attention to social issues; I started to observe people around me and seize the the time we spend together. This book has changed me a lot.
I became a reader in Mandarin because of my elder sister. She opened the door of reading for me and brought me plenty of novels in my elementary school time so that I could totally immerse myself in the wonderful world. Since then, I have cultivated the habit of reading everyday. However, I'm still not a reader in English, for when I'm reading English books, I'll feel like I'm doing some reading test which is kind of stressful and uneasy. Maybe it's because I did too much reading tests in my high school time.
I would say that it was the book made me a reader rather than a person. It is the book that I found interesting and attracting so that I kept reading. But the environment is also very important. The perfect place for me to read is in my room. I can read all day long without any pause on my cozy bed. It's very quiet there and I can also read in any postures I like. It is definitely a great enjoyment. In contrast, the school never made me a reader; instead, the school made me tired of reading since it reminded me a lot about exams and grades.
I can feel the same way you state that a multitude of tests distract our interest in reading in English. In spite of that, I do think you have already made a good start on being a “good” reader.
