Book Chosen: Wuthering Heights
Pages read:1-81

For the group project, our group chose to read the classic Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. I was actually nervous before I read it because I had never read it before and I was afraid the way the author telling the story could be different than modern books. I had to admit I had a hard time getting into it. However, I gradually picked it up and I got very into it.

The book started when a young man named Lockwood paid a visit to his landlord, Heathcliff, and accidentally found the old nanny’s diary, telling the story which had gone on for 2 generations.

Old Earnshaw adopted a gipsy kid and named him Heathcliff. No need to say, the kid was bullied a lot due to his race, what’s more, Earnshaw’s son, Hindley, resented him for stealing away his father’s affection and love to him. However, Heathcliff and Earnshaw’s daughter, Cathy, got along really well. They played together all the time, they laughed and they had fun. The fate was brutal though. Earnshaw died, Heathcliff lost the only person who loved him selflessly and protected him like his real father.

Hindley inherited his father’s properties and made Heathcliff a servant, stopping him from seeing Cathy, and tortured him not only physically but also emotionally. Heathcliff planned on running away with Cathy, but Cathy was hurt the day before their elopement and was rescued by a wealthy young man Edgar. Heathcliff’s personalities became more and more twisted, and he wanted to revenge for he thought it was the only way to make up the hurt he received.

It became more and more interested the more I read. I felt bad for Heathcliff because he had to go through so much torture not only physically but also emotionally just simply because of his race and the fact the he was adopted. Back in the days, racial discrimination was everywhere. But people should all be equal. In my opinion, no matter what country we came from, no matter what color our skin is, and no matter what language we speak, we should all be treated good and share the same rights. Also, I do have to admit that I am not really a fan for tragedy. I love happy ending because it is not entirely possible in reality, so when I read I tend to read the books with happy endings. Therefore, this is a first to me. I am a little bit worried for what is going on next because I have heard that the story is only getting sadder and sadder, but I am also a little bit excited for what is going on next.
