Hindley’s wife gave birth to their son Hareton
but died from Dystocia. Hindley was so depressed that he spent all of his time
drinking. Cathy decided to be with Edgar because he was wealthy and because she
thought it could also save Heathcliff out from her brother. However, by doing
so, Heathcliff felt humiliated and determined to leave.
Three
years after, hearing that Cathy was getting married with Edgar, Heathcliff
returned as a wealthy man. He gained a lot of confidence and he was ready to
revenge. He would mock the old servant, pick up with Edgar and blame Cathy for
leaving him three years ago. He gambled with Hindley and won all of his
property. He also seduced Edgar’s sister, Isabella, and successfully made her
marry him.
Heathcliff
thought he ought to be happy after all the revenges, but when Cathy died of delivering
her daughter, Catherine, he realized he was not happy at all. In fact, he felt
more alone than ever.
I was very upset while I was reading the
part I was supposed to read this time. At first I doubt Cathy’s love to Heathcliff
but then I realized she had no choice at all. Back in the time, women had no
power and they could not be independent, so the only thing they could do was to
marry a wealthy man and pray for a peaceful life. Sadly, Heathcliff was blinded
by hatred. I really did feel bad for him. He must have been so desperate for
love that he tried to do anything to get attention. But the book also taught us
that revenge would not bring you happiness. The only way you could finally be
happy and stop being tangled by the past is to let go and move on.
