After discussion, our group decided to choose
Media Chaos as our topic. I think the topic is quite big and it covers a lot of
detailed issues. In my previous log, I talked about how Medias exaggerate news
title to attract the public and how people lose ability to recognize true and
fake news. This week, I would like to focus on how Media lose sight of the main
point.
On February 13, 2017, news about a serious car
accident, which caused death to 33 people, occupied almost every newspaper and
TV program. Information about what caused the tragedy and who should take the
responsibility was given by reporters and analyzed by pundits. However, there
was a piece of news focused on what they ate for their dinner. Video, which
pictured those passengers’ last figure by monitor in the bakery, was shown. The
news talked about how much bread they bought and how long they stayed at the
bakery. It mentioned that tourists often stayed at the bakery about 15 minutes
but they were there almost half an hour. Therefore, they must be hungry and exhausted
then. Reporters ended this news by saying “Bread becomes their last dinner! How
uncertain life is!” I was confused about why I should know what the deceased
ate for their last meal and besides, what was the connection between what they
ate and how the accident happened. I also thought that the news was impolite to
the deceased. This news totally lost sight of the main point.
Another event shared the same idea—Hong’s
death in the military. Rather than investigating the truth behind the
mistreating, Medias focused a lot on Hong’s sister. Her height, weight,
education and relationship were all brought to the public. These elements
definitely had no business with her brother’s death. Furthermore, Media
reported politics showing their sympathy to Hong’s family one after another as
if it had been a show letting Taiwanese know who could be the best leader of
our country.
Media losing sight of the main point could be
part of Media Chaos. Important issues were obscured by insignificant discussion
from Medias.
