Log #4

Imagine that in order to stop sea level rising, some people plan to freeze the ocean by pumping sea water to Antarctica. It sounds weird but this week I read an article talked about this solution to sea level rising. It says that there are some scientists who have actually investigated the idea with computer simulations, calculating how much water would need to be pumped, and how much energy it would consume. And analyzing it’s benefits and damages.

But after reading it, I still think this method is unfeasible. The most important is that herculean task would require numerous energy to pump it. Our energy comes from burning of fossil fuel and electricity which almost comes from thermal power or nuclear power. If we decide to do this project, the first problem we facing is that the cost of energy and environment is too big. Even if this was feasible, it would only buy time. Also, the most sensitive coastal ecosystems of Antarctica would of course be seriously affected by this measure. Therefore, I think the government should do right now which is starting to plant tons of trees for removing carbon and strengthening the advocacy of energy saving and carbon emission reduction.
