Log #3

It is a story I have been tracking up for a month or two now. Casey Affleck was never really a thing because he kind of live under Matt Damon and his brother Ben Affleck’s spotlight until he won an Oscar. Despite the fact that he was never famous, I used to like him very much. He was here in there in some of the movies I watched, like Tower Heist, Ocean’s eleven and its sequels. I especially loved him while he was in Ocean’s eleven even though he didn’t have as much scenes as George Clooney and Brad Pitt but I thought he was adorable.

So this is what happened when the celebrities you liked caught into trouble. When I knew Casey Affleck was nominated by Oscars, I was so happy for him that he finally broke through his big brother’s spotlight. Then I read about the sexual harassment and how he paid it off. That was like Britney Spears shaved off her head happening all over again. I felt mad and betrayed and I was just so  shocked. That was totally disrespectful to your co-workers, thinking you could just get away with it. What pissed me off more was that he never made an announcement (official or not) apologizing to the girls who were harassed, he never really talked about it.

I was hoping that he wouldn’t get an Oscar but somehow deep down I knew he would probably get it. However, when I saw Brie Larson announced his name, I was still disappointed. My mom started to take me to movies since I was 3 years old and movies have inspired me so much ever since. That was not it should have been like. Being an actor doesn't mean you only need to good at acting, you should also have a good personality, appreciating everyone who gets you under that light, giving you that moment by doing their job, not harassing them and pretending nothing happened. Here is the thing, being an actor or actress means that you have not much of privacy, which also means that you should really be careful with what you do in private, because people would aspire to be you, and harassing your female co-workers is not really being the best role model to the society.

What made me despise him was when he gave his acceptance speech, and he said that he wished he had had more important message to talk about. I was furious. Furious. If I were able to meet him at the moment, I would probably storm to him and say, “how about telling people that you should not harass girls and act so cocky and careless after you paid them off?”

This incident may not come to you as a gender inequality thing right away, but think about it twice. The girls who filed his harassment case was actually criticized, people claiming that they were just using his fame while he could still go out, wearing tailored suits, accepting a huge award for his acting. What if today the roles are reversed? Would the person still get away with it? Or actually people justify men’s sex impulse way too much that we are gradually neglecting one of the most important virtue?
