I have been fortunate since I was born. Why
do I say so? Gender inequality seems epidemic even in this era. Situations may
happen in family, work place, social media, or school. I am lucky because I am
treated as equally as men in my family.
I was born in a big family, where I live
with grandparents, parents, uncle and aunt. At beginning, there were only 3
girls (including me and my sisters) in my family, and I am the oldest. Years
later, uncle and aunt had a baby-a boy. I knew my
grandparents were looking forward to grandson coming because I overheard they
told my mom that it was pity if only she had given birth to a little boy. It is
shocking, isn’t it?
However, my grandparents embraced this fact
and decided to follow the new trend of gender equality. It was liberal of them
that all children in this family would gain equal allowance from them. In
addition to that, they wouldn’t be partial to any kids. Whoever made trouble,
the one must have been punished with a hand-made bamboo stick. Trust me. That’s
hurt as if a knife scratch on the skin but the surface is only a little
swollen, and you still can feel the pain inside the skin. Anyway, that is not
the point. I try to focus on how my grandparents are being the older models in
gender equality.
As I know, there are many children living
in patriarchy families. “Girls are supposed to do household chores.” “Girls
should always act girly.” Um…I am really curious about the definition of Girl. Is
that girls have to be tender or attentive? After pondering thoroughly on this
issue, I analyze out that education make an extremely role in gender equality. That
is because once a human being constantly receive a traditional perspective from
his/her own family, when he/she grows up, he/she will hold the same perspective
on other people. That’s why we can hardly prevent from gender inequality or any
discrimination. People have been shaped. Only when somebody have the awareness of
this issue (they are willing to educate their kids or other people) can our
world remain equal to every person, every race, every religion.
