I have shared the articles related to my final project, but today I would like to introduce several old movies I have watched recently. I have always had a list of movies I should watch. I never really spare the time to watch them but recently I have decided that since I got Netflix, I should take advantage of it.
The first movie I watched from the list was Back to the future. It is kind of ironic because one of my favorite bands named themselves after this movie, but I never got to watch it. Back to the future is actually a trilogy, and so far I have watched the first and the second ones. Marty McFly was friends with the weird scientist, Doc, in the town, Doc created a time machine but he was shot terrorists when he was trying out the time machine with Marty while Marty flew to the pass to run away from terrorists. Marty went back to 1955, which was the year when his parents met, but his surprising appearance interrupt their meeting, and his mom ended up having a crush on him. Marty had to go look for Doc from 1955 and ask him to help him get back to 1985 while trying to get his parents fall in love.
The whole movie was very entertaining, especially watching Marty trying to get away from Biff, who bullied his dad all the time. However it was intriguing how a single decision could change a person’s whole life. For instance, Marty’s parents were poor in the beginning but they ended up rich after Marty went back to 1985 again because George, Marty’s father learned how to man up and protect his woman. He ended up learning how to defend his own rights and go look for what he really wants instead of settling for life. It may sound cliche, but that is a movie, but in real life you don't have a time machine, and you don't get to relive your moment again. Therefore, you really have to live your life, and seize your chance. Oh, and I also like their Chuck Berry joke where they implied that Marty actually wrote Johnny B. Goode for Chuck Berry, it was funny.
The second movie I watched was fight club. This one was a little bit more intense and a lot of violence was involved. starting the movie, Edward Norton’s character had serious mental problem, and he had severe insomnia until he went to various support groups, but that was ruined by a girl named Marla as well. Good thing was he met Tyler on a plane, they became good friends and started fight club together. At first he finally felt alive, but then he realized Tyler was taking all the credit, and was planing something really evil, he needed to stop him.
Fight club is a completely different genre of movie from Back to the future, and I have watched fight club for at least 3 times for the last month. It has so many issues to talk about. Some people said back when the economic went down, men found it hard to prove their own existence, so fighting made them feel like they were worth something, which was why the movie was related to so many people. I found this idea funny though, not that I disagree, just also there was only one woman in the whole movie, so that makes us ask, where were all the girls?
In my opinion, women were all busy doing their job, cooking meals, taking care of kids while men are out fighting for their own identity. Women didn’t have the time to go to fight club nor did they need it because they clearly knew who they were. They were mothers, daughters, sisters, workers, and sometimes themselves.
Don’t get me wrong, I love this movie. I have never want to watch a movie again right after I finished, it was so details oriented, and I was so amazing by how the writers tricked us all through the movie. I was just laughing about how men were thinking about blowing up all the banks because financial crisis made them feel like they were less of men. I do think the script and filming of this movie are brilliant though. A good script could be so powerful that the story lingered in your head for days.
